Carney Bates & Pulliam is committed to holding Big Business and governments accountable. Attorneys in our firm have faced the world’s largest corporations, forcing settlements, curbing illegal practices, and recovering over a billion dollars for class members.
A class action is a form of lawsuit that allows one or several individuals to represent a larger group of people who all suffer from the same injury or who are victimized by the same deceptive business practice or defective product. Often numbering in the thousands or even millions, this collection of individuals—the “class”— has been harmed by the same defendant or defendants, and each member has been harmed in a similar way.
The main benefit of class actions is that they allow many people to speak with one voice. Often, companies will break the law where the harm to their customers is relatively minor, but even if a company’s bad act only causes a small amount of damage to any one person, the practice or product may cause millions of dollars or more of damage when all of the individual harms are added up.
A single plaintiff standing up to a giant corporation will have little effect in such circumstances, but a class action allows all of the claims to be grouped together, and forces a defendant to answer for the full weight of its actions. We advance the expenses of the litigation, so that plaintiffs and class members don’t have to go out of pocket in the process of seeking justice. Our fees and expenses are paid by the defendant once the case is successfully concluded.
